Election Analysis and Data

First of all I just want to say its a relief that the election went smoothly as it did.

The data I am using is the preliminary results from the election office website. Maumoon got 82,121 votes which was 45.79 %, Anni got 97,222 votes which comes to 54.21% of the total votes.

Total number of voters were 181,202 which is 86.58% of the eligible voters.

Naturally Maumoon came strong in the atolls, but unlike last time Anni regained in the ballot boxes in Male'. He won all the boxes in Male' except for Kaafu Atoll and Laamu Atoll. If we look at the results regionally, we see that Maumoon won 9 regions (Shaviyani, Raa, Lhaviyani, Kaafu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu and Laamu). And Anni won 16 regions (Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Noonu, Baa, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Thaa, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnyaviyani, Seenu, Resort Islands, Overseas votes, Industrial Island, Jail votes, and Male'). The following graph shows these in details.

It was a close call in Haa Dhaalu, Noonu, Dhaalu and Thaa. The winner got less than 5% difference in these regions. From the results it seems that Maumoon's strongholds are Raa, Kaafu, Vaavu Meemu and Laamu. Anni's strongholds are Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Seenu, the resorts, Overseas votes, Jail votes and Male' votes. They both got more than 10% in these regions

Election Analysis - Atoll voters in Male'

When we compare votes at atoll level, we see a huge vote difference between Maumoon and the other candidates (click here for the post). However, when we look at the votes candidates got from Atoll ballot boxes in Male',the difference is comparatively low.
It is interesting to note that Hassan Saeed managed to capture a huge proportion of Addu votes, especially from the ballot boxes in Male'. Meanwhile Gasim held on to the South Ari Atoll votes.

Election Analysis - Difference of psyche between Male' and the Atolls

Its interesting how the people in Male' and the people in the Atolls decide on the vote. There is an apparent difference depending on whether the person is living in Male' or they are resided in their home atoll. The following two graphs visualising this factor for the top two candidates, Maumoon and Anni. For Maumoon it seems that he does well when the islander is located at home, and for Anni it seems that he does well when the islander is located in Male'
